Notes From The East

By Sam Warburton

Our instructor Sifu Wai has recently been in Hong Kong at the home of Practical Wing Chun training with his teacher GM Wan Kam Leung! HKF asked him some quick questions about his visit.

How long did you stay in HK?

I arrived in HK on the 9th of December and I have stayed since dec 24th.

Your training was focused on the Long Pole, can you sum up the purpose of Pole training in two sentences please?

The pole training gives the practitioner great fore-arm and core power. It will also enhance the WC practioner his or her understanding of the different ways to defend and counter while in unarmed combat or armed combat (staff or similar long weapon) situations

Do any of the movements apply directly to unarmed application such as those in the SLT?

Not only gives it great core and arm strength (punching power) there are also a lot of unarmed applications.

What are the highlights of the city for you?

The highlights are many, I just love HK, the restaurants the KungFu feeling you get in Kowloon, the many beautiful temple’s they have …. and so on ;-)

What is the most challenging thing you find about training in HK?

Most challenging I find is to find the right training partner and actually train serious …

What do you most appriciate about with Wan Sifu?

Sifu is great in his explanations to me, the only thing I don’t like so much is him always telling everybody how great I am and how strong I am …. he is exaggerating my abilities to much.

Thank you very much Sifu!
